Becoming a parent is easy. For many people it only takes a minute or so. Less in some cases. But that doesn’t mean that coping with the resulting baby is as easy. Here are a few tips on how to survive your baby.

The nine months or so of pregnancy are a doddle. Giving birth to a few pounds of human being is a breeze. The real challenge of having a new baby is when you get back home from the hospital, shut the door behind you, and suddenly realise that there’s a whole new human life entirely dependent on you for everything. I remember that moment well. For me, that’s when I truly became a parent I think.

But from the moment that front door closes and you’re finally on your own with your new little responsibility there are certain things you need to know, and to remember. Some of these you’ll have been told by the nurses and midwife at the hospital, although the chances are that you’ll be in such a state that you’ll forget much of this anyway.

Some of the tips you need to remember and be aware of aren’t always mentioned though, and so here are my top parenting tips for surviving the first few days, and making sure that you and your little charge are safe and well.

1. Head Support. It is critical to remember that a new-born baby cannot support their own heads. The weight of the head is too much for their as yet undeveloped neck muscles, and so whenever you pick up, hold or move your baby you should always take very great care to ensure that their head is well supported.

You’ll find many people will want to hold your baby, so when handing him or her over, make sure that the other person knows to support the head, watch for this, and take great care when taking your baby back off them. It’s important not to allow anyone to play bouncing games on their knee, or throwing the baby in the air. You may think this absurd, which is good, but the truth is that sadly it does happen, usually because people just didn’t realise.

2. Hand Sanitiser. Your new-born baby doesn’t yet have a fully developed immune system, which means that he or she is very much more susceptible to infections. For this reason it is important to make sure that anyone around your baby, touching them or touching things that may end up being chewed on or sucked on, washes their hands thoroughly. The best thing is to have a bottle of hand sanitiser as is used in the hospital, and get people in the habit of using this before holding the baby.

Yes, it is true that exposure to germs is good for young children, but there’s time enough for that. During the very early days it is far better to play safe and avoid any possible infection or illness.

3. Nappies. Your new little bundle of joy will dirty their nappy quite a lot. Ten times a day is about normal. I strongly recommend getting the nappy things all together handy, so that when it’s time to do a change you can reach everything easily with one hand whilst holding your baby still with the other. We used a nappy basket with nappies, wipes, talcum powder and nappy cream all together.

When changing a nappy on a little boy make sure that you get the ‘hose’ covered quickly! For some reason once a baby boy feels the fresh air ‘down below’ he feels the need to pee. We always got in the habit of dropping a wet wipe onto his bits once the nappy was off as this helped to stop the effect!

When changing a nappy on a little girl always make sure that you wipe her bottom from front to back, as doing it the other way round can result in a very unpleasant urinary infection.

Don’t worry if your baby gets nappy rash – it’s very common. To help your baby make sure that you change a wet nappy as quickly as possible, and give them a little time each day with nothing on at all. Nappy cream helps – slather it on and you’ll find that in two or three days it’s much better. If it persists though don’t ever be afraid of having a word with your doctor or health visitor.

But whether that computer ends up stuffed full of 'free' toolbars, 'Candy Crush' games and photographs of lycra wearing cats on skateboards, or full of useful stuff that might actually make a difference, all depends on what goes on in those early years. As a parent you have the opportunity - no, the DUTY - to make that difference. Here's how.

What do you suppose is the single most important experience a young child can have, that will have a significant impact on the entire rest of their life? Besides perhaps parental love, the simple answer is play.

For a young child play is critical, it is vital for their intellectual growth, for their social development, for their understanding of the world, of themselves, of language, of so much that makes so much of a difference to so much of the rest of their lives.

But simply saying that play is important isn't really enough, because there are many different types of play, different ways of playing, and different ways in which play can have a positive impact on the development of a child's brain.

So here are 3 different types of play, and ways in which it can be significantly beneficial to a child.

1. Active Versus Passive. Some toys are active, and some are passive. Which would you consider best? In fact passive toys are by far the best when it comes to the development of so many lifelong skills.

An active toy is one which does all of the action for the child. The child presses a button, sits back, and watches the toy move and shake and dance and clap and sing and flash its lights and do all sorts of exciting things. While the child just watches. Passively.

Active toys make for passive children, whereas passive toys.. yes, you've guessed it, make for active children. Not necessarily physically active, but intellectually or socially active.

For example, give a child a cardboard box, a pile of bricks and a cardboard tube, and let them get on with it. They will have a great deal of fun, and they'll be actively writing the rules, making the decisions, planning, testing, playing, experimenting and having a lot of creative fun.

2. Rules Versus Free For All. Sometimes having play which includes rules is important and beneficial. A board game for example includes rules, teaching children about taking turns, about waiting, about sharing, and about using strategies.

This type of play is great, but it is also important to introduce play that has no rules. It’s sometimes too easy to introduce rules into play which doesn't need them. So for example, if you were to give a child a box of dressing up outfits, then tell them to put on a superhero outfit and go to rescue someone might sound fun, and it might sound as though you as a parent are offering them helpful direction and ideas. But what you're actually doing is giving them rules.

Sit back and let them get on with it. Let them design the game, choose the rules and decide what's going to happen. It might be mad, it might not make much sense, but a child's intellect, creativity and imagination will be greatly benefitted.

3. Focus Versus Variety. If you find a child spending ages doing the exact same thing over and over again it is easy to assume that they are nearing boredom and that you should change the game, and introduce a new thing to play with or a new activity to do.

Yes, they have just built a tower of blocks twenty times and it has fallen down every time, but don’t be too ready to leap in and show them how to do it, or say never mind, let’s try playing this game instead. Children's brains are wired differently from ours, and they're programmed to want to try something over and over.

Yes, they may not get it right, and they may face the same problem time and time again, but it’s their brains way of proving theories, testing its understanding, learning about problem solving. If you rush in with the answer too soon they won’t have capitalised on the learning opportunity sufficiently to make it worthwhile.

It’s also important to leave them as this repetitive play can often result in them being utterly absorbed in what they’re doing, and they may well have monetarily blocked you out completely. This is good, because this is where they develop the ability to concentrate and to focus, something essential throughout life.

The so-called ''helicopter'' parent is becoming ubiquitous, with new research showing more than 90 per cent of school psychologists and counsellors are encountering over-involved parents.

Some schools are staging parenting workshops to counter this behaviour as psychologists believe it can damage a child's resilience.

A Queensland University of Technology survey of nearly 130 parenting professionals from across the country revealed numerous examples of overparenting: a 16-year-old whose mother makes him a special plate of food to take to parties because he is a picky eater; 10-year-olds attending school camp who don't know how to dress themselves; and an eight-year-old whose mother confronts her classmate over a playground disagreement.

More than a quarter of the school psychologists, counsellors, teachers and mental health workers surveyed reported seeing ''many'' instances of overparenting. Nearly two-thirds said they had seen some instances of this behaviour, while 8 per cent had never witnessed it.
An Australian Psychological Society representative, Darren Stops, said psychologists had observed the emergence of the helicopter parent in schools over the past decade.
''Children are not allowed to be independent, they're overscheduled, parents are over-involved in their child's life, they're not letting children learn from their own mistakes,'' said Mr Stops, an educational and developmental pyschologist who works in schools.

''We tend to see more young people that aren't able to accept the consequence of their own actions because mum and dad will jump in to defend them.''

The research also found schools were fielding parental requests for children to be placed in the same class as a friend, or in a sports house that matched their favourite colour, as well as parents contesting discipline meted out to their child.

Some schools are trying to head-off the issue of overparenting by hiring experts to advise new kindergarten parents on the appropriate level of involvement in their child's life.
Florence Kearney, the principal of Somerville House, a private school in Brisbane, said holding parenting workshops run by a clinical pyschologist had proved successful at countering overparenting.

''It makes our job more difficult when parents overparent,'' Ms Kearney said. ''They have to let go and let their children learn to take risks and develop into confident people.''
Psychologists warn that overparenting is helping produce a generation of anxious children who aren't resilient, have poor life skills, a strong sense of entitlement and little sense of responsibility.

''The result of overparenting is Gen Y: they're highly emotional and expect everything to go their way - and they were parented less than the current generation,'' QUT PhD researcher Judith Locke, who conducted the study, said.''You can't complain about Gen Y and then go home and indulge your child.''

A clinical psychologist, Ms Locke's research revealed many parents aren't letting their child reach normal developmental milestones, such as travelling alone.

Ms Locke said parents were overthinking their own childhood. ''They're looking at the flaws in their childhood and they don't see them as lucky events which produced resilience, they see them as stopping them becoming superstars,'' Ms Locke said.

Family therapist Andrew Fuller, author of the parenting book Tricky Kids, said it was important parents didn't do things for children that they could do themselves.

''Parents are carrying a massive burden of guilt because they are time-poor so they try to make it up to kids with things to replace time.''

Psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg believes overparenting has almost become the norm. ''Parents have fewer children these days, so they've got more energy and time to devote to, and focus on, these individuals … there are going to be so many screwed-up teens as a result of this.''

These ideas will steer you in the right direction when shopping and preparing meals. Start by making one or two new changes, then, once you’re comfortable with those, make another.
Switch from white to wholegrain bread. The wholegrains will help you and your family power through the day – but don’t just stop at bread, you can also swap your pasta and cereals too.
Reduce the amount of saturated fat in your family’s diet. To lower your saturated fat intake, replace full-fat milk and dairy products with reduced fat versions.

Don’t reach for sugar. Do you crash and burn at 3pm? Instead of reaching for sugary goodness, fill up on one of the two serves of fruit we should be eating daily.

I can’t believe it’s not butter. Swap butter for margarine for all your cooking and eating needs. Butter contains 50% saturated fat compared to the 14% in margarine. Use spreads made from canola, sunflower or olive oil or those that have the Heart Foundation tick.

Baked not fried. Rather than splashing some oil in a pan and cooking your crumbed fish, chicken and fries, try cooking them in the oven.

Look for reduced salt foods. Salt is in most foods so while shopping seek out labels with ‘no added salt’ or products that contain less than 120 mg of sodium per 100g. When in doubt, look for the Heart Foundation Tick. Also, break the habit of adding salt to your cooking and throw in some herbs and spices instead.

Swap soft drinks for water. Encourage family members to drink water rather than fizzy drinks, cordial, sports drinks or fruit juice.

Last month, the federal government finally gave the green light to allow SPF 50+ products to be sold in Australia (Europe and the States have been hip to the 50-factor for years now). But the added level of protection doesn't mean you can get away with wearing less sunscreen or spend more time in the sun.
According to Dermalogica education manager Emma Hobson, if it takes your skin eight minutes to burn without sunscreen, an SPF 50+, if applied correctly, should hypothetically protect the skin from burning rays for about 400 minutes. But here's the catch. Unlike the strict test-lab conditions, we rarely apply enough sunscreen to benefit from the full SPF. What's more, swimming, exercising and towel-drying can cause the product to wear off. "As a rule, always apply one teaspoon of product on each arm and leg, one each on the back and on the torso, and half a teaspoon for the face and neck, including the ears and the back of the neck," says Hobson.
And regardless of the SPF rating, it's essential that you reapply the product every two hours, especially if swimming or exercising.

Most children are constantly on the go, expending energy all the time. Therefore it’s essential that children eat enough nutrient dense and energy rich food like carbohydrates in their diet, as well as other nutrients like protein and fat, to help fuel their active bodies, and meet their nutrient requirements for growth and development.

Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of fuel for the brain and body, which is especially important for children as they are still developing, and need both brain and body to help them learn and play. Carbohydrates are also required for digestion, assimilation of other foods, and to help break fat down in the liver.

Carbohydrates should make up at least 45-65% of total daily calories in a child’s diet. This is dependant on age, gender and daily activity levels. Healthy choices of carbohydrates include wholegrain foods such as breads, breakfast cereals, grains, pasta and noodles, as well as fruit, vegetables, legumes and dairy products. Wholegrain foods provide longer lasting energy, as well as feeling fuller longer because of their high resistant starch or insoluble fibre content, which digests in the body more slowly, allowing the body’s blood sugar to rise more gradually.

Unhealthy choices of carbohydrate foods include soft drinks, lollies, cakes, biscuits, pastries, ice cream and chips. These foods are often high in sugar, salt, fat (particularly trans fat), and low in fibre. Examples of some of these nutrients include:

Folate or folic acid, which is essential for normal red blood cells, cell production and maintenance in the body, brain growth and nervous system development. Daily folate recommendations for children include:
  • 1 to 3 years — 150 micrograms
  • 4 to 8 years — 200 micrograms
  • 9 to 13 years —300 micrograms
  • 14 to 18 years – 400 micrograms
  • Good sources of folate include fortified breads and cereals, citrus fruits, legumes and leafy greens.

Calcium, which is essential for healthy bones therefore an important nutrient whilst bones are still growing. Daily calcium recommendations for children are
  • 1 to 3 years — 500 milligrams
  • 4 to 8 years — 800 milligrams
  • 9 to 18 years — 1,300 milligrams
Dairy products are a good source of calcium, as well as vitamin D and protein. And they also contain necessary fat that children need for energy, growth and development. 2-3 servings of dairy can help children meet these recommendations. Full-fat dairy products are required up to the age of 2 then low-fat dairy products can be offered from then on. Calcium can also be found in other foods, but usually in smaller amounts. Some of these foods include tinned salmon, sardines, dark green leafy vegetables, tofu, almonds, tahini and calcium fortified products.

5-30% of protein and 25-40% of fat make up the remainder of a kids daily diet. Percentages are dependant on age, gender and daily activity levels.

Protein provides energy, but more importantly is required for building and repairing the body. For example it helps build and repair muscle, bones, organs, skin, hair, nails and so much more. Protein rich foods include lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs dairy, legumes and nuts.

Fat is a good source of energy and essential fatty acids. It is also required for normal brain development, growth and cell production, as well as absorption of some vitamins. Fat is obtained from foods and oils in the diet. It’s found in three forms: saturated fat which is found in all animal products i.e. meat and dairy; monounsaturated fat which is found in most nuts and pumpkin seeds, canola and olive oil; and polyunsaturated fat which is found in fish, soybeans, and other seeds. All three types of fats are needed for a healthy diet but care should be taken not to consume too much fat, especially saturated fat, which aren’t good for health and can lead to chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease and weight gain.

Children need to be eating a balanced and nutritious diet that includes plenty of healthy carbohydrates, along with proteins and fats, and limits added sugars and salt. Not only will this help your child remain active but also adopt a healthier relationship to food, as well as lifestyle that can be hopefully carried out lifelong.
